NFL Draft 2008NCAA Scouting – Player Profile:
Martellus Bennett, TE
by Jody Jamieson
9/4/2008

The undoubted comparisons between Martellus Bennett and Antonio Gates may commence. Bennett lettered at Texas A&M; as a basketball player as well as a football player, and did declare for the NBA Draft in 2005 before withdrawing his name. Eventually after two years as an Aggie he gave up on basketball and concentrated on football, playing tight end and as a part time defensive lineman.

Martellus BennettBennett had a great junior year, totalling 49 catches for 587 yards and four touchdowns. His decision to leave college a year early was made that little bit easier with the complete overhaul of the coaching staff at Texas A&M.;

What we like about Bennett

6’7″ tall and with excellent hands, Bennett will be a huge threat in the passing game. Couple that with the fact that Bennett is probably the best blocking tight end out there this draft, and Bennett may be the top ranked tight end this year. Will extend his arms to make the difficult catches and catch the poorly thrown balls. Plays with no lack of aggression, which helps him as a blocker. Loves to block and is a great blocker when he reaches the second level.

Question Marks about Bennett

Bennett can be a very mechanical route runner. May struggle to gain separation in the Pros. He has reasonable speed, but needs to get off the line quicker. Accelerates too slowly. Can over extend on blocking assignments. Bennett could rival Dallas tackle Flozell Adams’ title as the false start King of the World.

Highlight of his college career

In 2006, Bennett had a career game against Baylor, making 5 catches but taking them for 133 yards and 2 scores.

Other Snippets Of Information

  • Various combine stats: 4.68sec 40 yard dash, 34 inch vertical jump, 18 bench reps.

  • While many are comparing Bennett with Antonio Gates, nfl.com notes the likeness to Giants TE Kevin Boss. Neither Boss, nor Bennett possesses the ideal speed, but have great hands and can block effectively.

  • Seattle or Green Bay may reach for Bennett in round one. If not, then Atlanta or New Orleans may take him in round 2.
