Jody Jamieson’s 2010 1st Round Mock Draft V1.0
Updated 16th October
by Jody Jamieson
16/10/2009

Its never too early for a Mock Draft right? Well while I sometimes believe its done a little early, I thought Id buck my own trend and get one out there as we approach the midway point of the college season. For the purpose of the draft order I am using the Week 5 power rankings provided by Diner reporter Khaled Elsayed. Ive had to juggle it a little due to the NFC being king in the early stages so we have an AFC team picking in the final 2 picks due to Super Bowl representation. Obviously a lot of this depends on underclassmen declaring, but with a potential rookie salary cap being implemented for 2011, this may be a strong class with a record number of juniors and redshirt sophomores coming out.

1. St Louis Rams Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma

sam bradford
Not many quarterbacks have the it factor but Bradford has it. He doesnt have an elite NFL arm but theres certainly nothing wrong with his throwing power. He makes great reads and quick decisions and has the it factor you dont often see in a young signal caller. Marc Bulger is going to be cut this offseason and the Rams know they must do something at the position.

2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska

I have Gerald McCoy ranked slightly ahead of Suh on my big board, but I believe that Suh is a great fit in this defense. If Monte Kiffin was still in Tampa Bay the pick would be McCoy due to the old Buccaneers defense being predicated on speed, even on the interior defensive line. Jim Bates has overhauled the defense, and Suh projects better in the system than McCoy.

3. Oakland Raiders Taylor Mays, S, USC

The only possibilities with this pack are Taylor Mays and Carlos Dunlap. Oakland always take the height-weight-speed combination and Mays are Dunlap are the two best exponents of this in this years Draft. #3 overall is a little high to be taking a safety, but the Raiders wont care. Im mocking them Mays because I assume they will re-sign Richard Seymour and thus wont particularly need a defensive end as badly.

4. Buffalo Bills Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State

Trent Edwards has been getting killed all year behind a porous offensive line and they need to find an upgrade at left tackle. Russell Okung is the best tackle on the board. This pick is assuming that Dick Jauron is still Head Coach, which is a major assumption obviously. If someone else is brought in, they may go for a quarterback. Im a believer in Edwards and I think its a better plan for Buffalo to protect him than replace him.

5. Cleveland Browns Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame

I didnt bother ranking Clausen in my original Top 64 because I had no idea how he was going to pan out. 2009 was either going to be boom or bust. Thus far Clausen has been magnificent for the Irish and is making a case to be the #1 overall pick. The fact that he plays in a pro offense will likely hold a lot of weight with scouts comparing him to Sam Bradford. Eric Mangini has given up on Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson is limited, so Mangini will have no problem taking the franchise quarterback.

6. Kansas City Chiefs Eric Berry, S, Tennessee

The Chiefs are in a position to Draft the best players available at any position due to their multitude of needs. Eric Berry is the best player on the board from the get go but teams have other needs, and theres no chance the Raiders take Berry over Mays. This is an absolute no brainer.

7. Washington Redskins Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma

The Redskins have issues on the offensive line. Assuming Jason Campbell isnt retained, they need to look for a new quarterback, but Im not convinced the value is here. Jake Locker hasnt quite done enough yet to be considered for the Top 15in my opinion and Jevan Snead is doing a fabulous job of playing himself right out of the first round. Unless someone trades up here, the Redskins go offensive line.

8. Detroit Lions Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma

Detroits offense is actually getting there. They still need to upgrade their offensive line, but itll be tough to pass up a defensive lineman like McCoy. McCoy comes in from Week 1 and improves their defense immensely.

9. San Francisco 49ers (from Carolina) Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa

With two first round picks the Niners have options. Shaun Hills blindside has been protected nicely, but right tackle is a black hole. Bulaga slots in at right tackle straight away.

10. Tennessee Titans Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida

The Titans just arent rushing the passer effectively, and its allowing their secondary to get torched. Kyle Vanden Bosch and Jevon Kearse are getting on in years and will both need to be replaced in the near future. They can bring in a guy like Dunlap to help solidify the DE rotation for the time being before taking over as a starter.

11. Jacksonville Jaguars Sean Weatherspoon, OLB, Missouri

Jacksonville have talked about taking Tim Tebow here. If I was a Jaguars fan I would be furious. Wayne Weaver is keen to take Tebow but not to improve his team but to sell tickets. You dont spend a first round draft pick on ticket sales. You spend it on a good player to make your team better so its easier to sell tickets that way. I however remain unconvinced that even the Jags will take Tebow in the first round. Jacksonville will like the playmaking skills of Weatherspoon at outside linebacker and this pick makes more sense than Tebow.

12. Dallas Cowboys Ciron Black, OT, LSU

Flozell Adams is having a disastrous season and will need to be replaced soon. The Cowboys like to put as much bulk as possible on the offensive line, and Ciron Black is a big unit that will appeal to them.

13. Houston Texans Joe Haden, CB, Florida

joe haden
Houstons defense has holes all over it, but they at least do a reasonable job of pressuring the quarterback. They need to get the secondary fixed and Joe Haden is establishing himself as the best cornerback on the board.

14. Arizona Cardinals Charles Brown, OT, USC

Mike Gandy is a liability and Levi Brown has been a major disappointment. The Cardinals could go defense here, but will likely try to sort out the offensive line that is currently getting Kurt Warner battered. Regardless of who the quarterback is next year, hell need to be protected better.

15. Seattle Seahawks Greg Hardy, DE, Ole Miss

Patrick Kearney isnt getting any younger, and the Seahawks are looking to build a formidable defense. They have secondary problems, but they can be addressed in a few picks time. Greg Hardy is too good to pass up.

16. Green Bay Packers Sergio Kindle, OLB/DE, Texas

Right now with Chad Clifton returning from injury and Mark Tauscher potentially returning from the streets the offensive line might be fine. Daryn Colledge is a really good guard but an awful tackle and Allen Barbre is a disaster. If Clifton and Tauscher stick for another year or two they can go another direction. Aaron Kampman may have to be moved on as he just doesnt fit the new 3-4 defense. He had a nice game against the Bears in Week 1 but has regressed ever since. Kindle can be a pass rushing outside linebacker to compliment Clay Matthews on the other side.

17. Miami Dolphins Terrence Cody, NT, Alabama

Teams are running wild on Miami, and nose tackle Jason Ferguson is part of the problem. Ferguson is past his best and Terrence Cody would be an instant upgrade.

18. Pittsburgh Steelers Trevard Lindley, CB, Kentucky

The Steelers need secondary help. When Troy Polamalu was missing for a few games, it was apparent how stretched their defensive backfield gets. They need to upgrade at safety with Ryan Clark a potential offseason free agent, but they take the corner here, and go safety and offensive line (but not necessarily in that order) with their next two picks.

19. San Diego Chargers Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State

Dez Bryant has been embroiled in controversy with the NCAA in recent weeks, but providing he gets back on the field soon, his draft stock wont suffer. San Diego potentially will have only Vincent Jackson on the roster as a genuine NFL starter, so they need to upgrade the position. I still think Bryant is the best receiver on the board right now.

20. Seattle Seahawks (from Denver through Chicago) Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State

Seattles defense of the future is almost complete with these two picks. I had Patrick Robinson as the best corner for this draft in the offseason, but Joe Haden has made marvellous strides. Thats no slight on Robinson who will be more than a competent NFL corner.

21. San Francisco 49ers – Brandon Spikes, ILB, Florida

Most 3-4 teams like a dynamic middle linebacker to run around and make plays while paired with a solid ILB who will do the dirty work. Patrick Willis is obviously Mr Dynamic in the 49ers defense, and right now Takeo Spikes is there to mop up and do the dirty work. The Niners wont be in a huge hurry to replace TKO but Brandon Spikes is.

22. New York Jets Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia

Darrelle Revis is having an amazing season, but there are still question marks on the other side. Lito Sheppard is still injured all the time. Dwight Lowery is talented but takes too many risks. Dowling could be the ball hawking compliment to Revis on the other side.

23. New England Patriots CJ Spiller, RB, Clemson

CJ Spiller
Lawrence Maroney is offering nothing to the Patriots and with a bunch of veteran runners on the roster, they need to upgrade. CJ Spiller is that upgrade.

24. Atlanta Falcons Myron Lewis, CB/S, Vanderbilt

Atlantas defense is still vulnerable and could do with an upgrade pretty much everywhere. Myron Lewis can fit anywhere in the defensive backfield and make an impact.

25. Baltimore Ravens Damian Williams, WR, USC

Derrick Mason is starting to slow down a little, and the Ravens need to give Flacco a viable receiver. Williams has been improving his stock with every passing performance, and by the time the draft rolls around, this may end up being a steal.

26. Cincinnati Bengals Jahvid Best, RB, California

Unbelievably, Cedric Benson has been brilliant for the Bengals. Unfortunately, if Benson goes down hurt they dont have a decent option to replace him. Jahvid Best isnt likely an every down back in the NFL, but hes going to be a big part of someones offense. Assuming Benson stays motivated, a 1-2 punch of Benson and Best would be scary.

27. Denver Broncos Jake Locker, QB, Washington

Kyle Orton has done all hes supposed to do in Denver thus far, but its not going to last. Once someone starts scoring points on the defense (and lets not pretend its never going to happen) then well see the real Kyle Orton and what hes not particularly capable of. Jake Locker is the buzz quarterback this year and has leaped up the boards. A lot of people have him going in the Top 10 which I think is far too high, but at the same time 27 might be a bit too low.

28. Minnesota Vikings Jonathan ODowd, C, USC

Minnesota allowed Matt Birk to leave in the offseason and wont be scared to use a late first rounder on his replacement. Its between Kris ODowd and Matt Tennant from Boston College for the top center prospect, and right now Ill give the edge to ODowd.

29. Philadelphia Eagles Corey Wooten, DE, Northwestern

Trent Cole is a beast, but they dont have a legitimate starter on the other side. Victor Abiamiri hasnt been great and Darren Howard is a situational guy. Im surprised the Eagles havent spent an early pick on a pass rusher for a few years, but look for that to chance in 2010.

30. New Orleans Saints Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State

Jared Odrick has a lot of versatility and can fit with a lot of teams. He can play DT in a 4-3, or play 5 technique in a 3-4. The Saints took Sedrick Ellis a couple of years ago who is starting to anchor the defensive line. Giving him a partner in crime would be a great idea.

31. Indianapolis Colts Vince Oghobaase, DT, Duke

Oghobaase may not be the type of tackle the Colts tend to go after, but its not as if theyve figured out a way to stop the run over the past few years. He isnt likely to be much of a pass rusher, but will be a killer in the running game.

32. New York Giants Travis Lewis, OLB, Oklahoma

The Giants are almost completely set on offense. They have good starters and very good depth. Outside linebacker could do with an upgrade and Lewis is a nice option here. Of course, this all depends on Lewis declaring as hes a redshirt sophomore, but if he does, this would be a marvellous pick for the Giants.
