EXCLUSIVE Diner chat with CB Antonio Cromartie
by Michael E Lawrence
24/10/2008

Diner:

antonio cromartie Antonio, are you looking forward to the game on Sunday and do you think you’ll win?

Antonio:

I’m looking forward to it a lot. I’m hoping to be out there to do the best that I can do, and I hope the outcome is we come away with the win we need.

Diner:

Is it a crunch game for you guys at 3-4?

Antonio:

Well both teams are down at 3-4 so it’s definitely important. The biggest thing for us is going into this weekend and trying to prepare for the Saints as well as we can so that we do everything we need to get the victory.

Diner:

You had an incredible 2007 with 10 interceptions and a trip to the Pro Bowl do you think this season’s been as good for Antonio Cromartie or are there things you’d like to improve on?

Antonio:

I’m still looking to push myself and I try to get better every single year, that’s the biggest thing for me. I’m motivated to work hard and I think everybody should put that effort in to constantly improve.

Diner:

antonio cromartie Do you think the Chargers are as good defensively without Shawne Merriman?

Antonio:

We’re the same, nothing changes we’ll still try to apply pressure the same way we did when he was here. We’re still a very tough defense to face.

Diner:

And are there any particular Saints that you’re focused on shutting down now that Reggie Bush is out of action?

Antonio:

There’s no one player we’re targeting, we just want to go out and play defense as a whole; we’re not trying to worry too much about stopping one person or anything like that. We’re just going out to play football!

Diner:

And final thought on London have you been able to actually get out and see the sights?

Antonio:

I’ve been stuck out in the countryside all week really so I haven’t had the chance.

Diner:

antonio cromartie It’s some nice countryside to be stuck in though

Antonio:

Actually it is very nice out here. But wherever we go the people are great and I’ve really enjoyed it so far.

Diner:

So overall it’s been a good experience and you’d come back for your holidays?

Antonio:

Oh yeah definitely!

Diner:

Thanks Antonio, nice to talk to you and good luck Sunday.

Antonio:

Thanks.

EXCLUSIVE Diner chat with WR Legedu Naanee
by Michael E Lawrence
24/10/2008

Diner:

legedu naaneeWhat are your thoughts on Sunday’s game Legedu? Will you win?

Legedu:

Yeah I think so. We had a good week’s practice and despite all the distractions of travelling over here we’re still pretty focused. We’ll need to be against the Saints.

Diner:

The feeling is that the trip here has been like a little minicamp for the Chargers and a chance to regroup is that your take on it too?

Legedu:

Yeah it is. We’ve been able to spend a lot of time with each other through making the journey and staying together in the hotel so we’ve bonded a lot this week.

Diner:

You’re not secretly getting a bit sick of each other?

Legedu:

legedu naaneeNot at all! I think it’ll really help us later. When you’re at home you spend a lot of time with your family and friends and here we’ve had nothing to take our attention away from bonding with one another. It’s going to make a difference down the stretch for us.

Diner:

What kind of role do you think you’ll play on Sunday? Will we see you on offense or will you concentrate on special teams?

Legedu:

Mainly special teams but I’ll help out wherever I can. When they call me hopefully I can get a ball or two so I’m just going to make sure I’m ready.

Diner:

Officially the Chargers are the away team do you think that’s any kind of disadvantage?

Legedu:

It’s gonna be interesting you know because I don’t know how the fans are over here and we don’t know if they’re gonna be cheering for both teams or whether they have a favourite. It should be an amazing atmosphere.

Diner:

legedu naaneeThere’s a school of thought that for the Giants in ’07 this was the game that propelled them to the Super Bowl. Do you think this might be a turning point that can take you all the way too?

Legedu:

Definitely. I know that last year they were kind of struggling and I’m sure that this experience helped their team unity just like it has done for us. For the Giants when rocky times came during the season it made them more together and helped them not get separated. Hopefully it’ll be the same thing for us this year.

Diner:

And have you been into London at all this week?

Legedu:

Yeah on Monday night we got to go downtown and have a look around, it was fun.

Diner:

What did you get up to? Are you at liberty to tell us?!

Legedu:

Yeah! We just went to dinner and walked around the town and checked out some of the famous spots.

Diner:

And have you sampled any classic British food like Fish ‘n’ Chips or Shepherd’s Pie?

Legedu:

Yeah I have actually, I had the Fish ‘n’ Chips.

Diner:

legedu naaneeWhat did you think?

Legedu:

I liked them a lot.

Diner:

Really? Not a bit bland?

Legedu:

No way! It’s just different, everything has a little different taste you know and that’s part of this incredible experience.

Diner:

Alright Legedu, thanks a lot and good luck on the weekend.

Legedu:

Thanks a lot.

EXCLUSIVE Diner chat with TE Antonio Gates
by Michael E Lawrence
24/10/2008

antonio gates Diner:

Antonio this is a must-win game for you guys did that result in an intensive practice today?

Antonio:

Yeah, it’s always intensive when you put yourselves in a position like we’re in and you have to climb out of a hole. And we very much created this problem for ourselves.

Diner:

What do you think has gone wrong to get you guys into that hole? It’s a similar slow start to 2007

Antonio:

antonio gates It’s true and it’s a combination of things. The number one thing is just executing in the game this is a tough league and it comes down to who makes the most plays and who protects the football. The last few games we’ve kind of been up and down; the games we won we managed to protect the football and in the games we lost we turned it over.

Diner:

And if it rains on Sunday as it did in 2007, what will you do differently?

Antonio:

Nothing major because it’s all part of football. If the ball is a bit slippery you have to really focus on catching it and certainly cutting becomes more of an issue, but for the most part you still have to play the game as you always do.

antonio gates Diner:

You’ve worked hard to evolve from being a street free agent out of Kent State into the premier pass catching tight end in this league does that still motivate you?

Antonio:

Yeah every day. This is the number one American sport and there are new guys coming in every year looking to challenge you for that top spot and who want to be a complete player in this league. Every year you bring in new faces and it makes it a challenge for the veterans who have produced before. The tough thing is to maintain it and that’s what I try and do.

Diner:

antonio gates Have the Brits you’ve met been as you expected they would be?

Antonio:

I’ve met some wonderful people man and they’ve all been so kind and generous. They often compare American Football to rugby here, which is interesting because obviously I’m not the typical size of a rugby player! They all go ‘you’re big!’ I think most rugby players are something like 200 lbs and I’m more like 260.

Diner:

So you could take them?

Antonio:

Oh yeah! But I don’t know if I could run with them though, they run all day.

Diner:

A noble answer. Thanks Antonio and good luck against New Orleans.

Antonio:

Appreciate it.

San Diego meets Surrey
by Michael E Lawrence
24/10/2008

Notes and quotes San Diego Charger Practice

Your intrepid Diner found itself at yet another five-star location this morning (we parked the Toyota out the back), having a look-see at Chargers practice and hanging with the likes of All Pro TE Antonio Gates, special teams ace Legedu Naanee and Pro Bowl CB Antonio Cromartie (click on their names for exclusive Diner photos and interviews with each). See the rest of the day’s action in our Chargers Diner Photo Gallery.

san diego chargers practise

Word on the field was that the Chargers practices here have been as intense and focused as any sessions all season. San Diego’s nattily attired PR man Jamaal LaFrance told us:

Coming here has been like another minicamp for this team and the last few days have been some of the most spirited days of practice we’ve had all year.

san diego chargers practise One area where the Chargers have already outdone the Saints is in the hotel stakes while the Saints have been living it up in one wing of an illustrious Hertfordshire resort, the Chargers went one further and hired the whole thing.

To think, they could have had the Diner’s front room for half the price.

We thought we’d go the whole way with that, said LaFrance, but it’s been great for the team because it’s a chance to get away and regroup.

Notable sights on the practice field this morning included:

  • Luis Castillo and the rest of the defensive line unit being put through their paces on countless snap drills

  • philip riversK Nate Kaeding nailing field goal after field goal in special teams drills

  • Ever-chatty LB Shaun Philips and fellow linebackers singing London-themed songs out loud while warming up, and ribbing Chargers’ sideline staff while he was at it

  • LT at the centre of team stretching drills not noticeably feeling the effects of his ongoing turf toe injury

  • A very relaxed looking Philip Rivers throwing tight spirals to receivers Vincent Jackson, Naanee and Malcolm Floyd and kidding around with mighty mite RB/KR Darren Sproles

Find out what the players think of Sunday’s game, the UK and other hot potatoes in our exclusive interviews below:

Football Diner Miami Dolphins vs New York Giants

Eli Manning and Michael Strahan
( Further Photos from Today )

Wembley 2007
Miami Dolphins vs New York Giants
Friday
26/10/2007

Wembley Report, 26th October: Dolphins’ London Press Conference; Giants Media Practice

So hot of the press our hands are singed

The Diner attended the Dolphins’ London press conference this morning; and then hot-footed it to the Giants practice/Q&A; session down in Chelsea FC’s training ground in Cobham.

Quotations, observations and sidebars from today’s action packed shenanigans:

Miami Dolphins Press Conference

First up, LT Vernon Carey (in the words of Bob Ball: “he’s a big lad”) hit the podium (not literally) and told the room the Dolphins offensive line wanted to prove that their running game success behind Ronnie Brown was “no fluke” and that they “intend to establish Jesse Chatman.”

Plaxico Burress“We’re a great unit he said,” when reminded about the Giants fierce pass rush.

Asked whether the ‘Phins might need to lean on British born WR Marvin Allen to get the win, a baffled Carey replied “who? I don’t know who you’re talking about,” though was quick to make amends when it was pointed out Allen was on the practice squad. Maybe Allen can show the rest of the Dolphins some decent London nightlife.

Quarterback Cleo Lemon arrived on the scene next, and pointed out that above all, this was a business trip: “we just want to come over here and get our first victory,” he said.

Also asked about the Giants’ pass rush behind London-born Osi Umenyiora, Lemon noted he’s been watching film of the Eagles’ Dononvan McNabb. That’ll help.

The journey over for Lemon had been an interesting one: “my wife and I were surrounded by ten 300 lb men on the plane here – we heard a lot of jokes, and a lot of weird noises.” That’s seven hours of weird noises the Diner doesn’t envy.

Jason Taylor, in an XXL England shirt that was still sufficiently undersized that he had to roll up the sleeves some, said he was doing so because “when in London, do as the English do.”

Reuben DroughnsAsked about ‘Big JT’, the vast animatronic model of Taylor touring London, he said he hadn’t seen it in person, but noted “the eyebrows are a bit big for my liking.”

Taylor on the game itself: “hey, the field’s the same size, the game’s played the same way, wherever we are. We’re 0-7, and simply trying to get our first win of the season.

Finally, owner Wayne Huizenga, who resembles a more cheerful Elmer Fudd in person, noted the reception in Britain had been “amazing.” So far, he’d visited the Prime Minister and Sports Minister in Number 10, and had had breakfast with Ken Livingstone.

On the Dolphins winless season, Huizenga could point the finger at only one man: “I’ll take the responsibility for 0-7. But listen, we’re all sticking together, and we want to win.”

Giants practice and Q&A; at Chelsea FC training ground, Cobham

Tom CoughlinOne coach ride later and the Diner was in the leafy groves of Cobham, Surrey, where the Giants arrived in coaches to go through a first London practice.

Beforehand, Eli Manning, Michael Strahan, Amani Toomer and Shaun O’Hara were on hand for a few photos. The Diner knocked over Strahan’s coffee and a jokingly-outraged Strahan noted how we’d “knocked it over, then put it back upright again as if it’d never happened!” Strahan was in buoyant mood.

Fresh faced Eli Manning meanwhile told the Diner he was “real excited and glad to be here.”

On the practice field itself, we couldn’t help but notice Jeremy Shockey, who said he’d had no sleep on the plane, shirking a few of the warm up exercises to open things up. As well as slipping past defenders in a zone, Shockey obviously has a knack for going unnoticed by Giants’ trainers.

After a walkthrough for the offense, with Eli handing off at half pace to Brandon Jacobs and Reuben Droughns, the special teams units also got a chance to strut it stuff with a series of punt and kickoff returns. Kicker Lawrence Tynes tried a field goal, and nailed the roof of a nearby construction hut in the process (though the ball did sail through the uprights first.)

Afterwards, in a Q&A;, Toomer, Antonio Pierce, Manning, Shockey, Osi Umenyiora and HC Tom Coughlin made themselves available for one on one questions.

Surrounded by groups of hacks and media types from America and Europe alike, the entire event had, according to one observer, “a Pro Bowl feel.”

Coughlin, visibly relaxed (huh?) told Football Diner that he wouldn’t be gameplanning for Jesse Chatman any different to Ronnie Brown because “he is an equally dangerous player, who has shown something special every time he has taken the field, though he is a different kind of runner.”

Amani ToomerHe also told us he didn’t expect the media furore to affect the Giants: “the players are fully aware of what’s at stake,” he said. “I’m counting on my team to play and play well.”

As a last treat for the Diner boys, we also ran into pundit extraordinaire Mike Carlson, who foresees a Giants win, possibly by a significant margin. Chatty and affable, Mike also reckoned that the media frenzy wouldn’t affect any of the players come Sunday. “It’ll all be about the game,” he said sagely.

Obviously, we took him at his word and went straight to the bookies.

Check back with us Monday/Tuesday for more from the teams’ post game press conferences.
