3-4 Defenses and the 2011 Draft
NFL Draft

February 28th 2011
Almost half of the NFL are running 3-4 defenses of some description, so clearly there is demand for players to fit these systems. Within the 3-4 defense you have more than the one system each with different responsibilities for the defensive lineman. As we start to get into “Mock Madness” season it seems an opportune time to have a look at the different types of defense that are around in the NFL and which prospects fit best into which scheme(s) along the defensive line…

Colin McCarthy The question with Colin McCarthy (Miami (Fl.)) was speed, but this was answered with the fastest time in this group (just shading under 4.6). NFL Draft 2011

March 21st 2011
The best of the top prospects was Robert Sands (West Virginia). He’s a tall kid who weighed in at 217 lbs. His 40 time was above average while his shuttle time was very good. The headline from this group was Jordan Cameron (USC). With former basketball player Jimmy Graham having a nice rookie year in New Orleans, this workout will see Cameron get some looks in the 3rd/4th round region. He has a nice combination of speed (excellent 40 time) and quickness (top shuttle) with everything else being good other than his bench which was above average. Bilal Powell Louisville RB Bilal Powell only ran for 392 yards last year he eclipsed that mark in two of his games this season and has now run for over 1,200 yards on the season. While he’s a rising prospect it must be remembered that he is a one season wonder and you do have temper any enthusiasm over this season with his first three years. Von Miller I watch a lot of games and see a ton of prospects, and watching Texas A&M; OLB Von Miller makes it worthwhile as it’s just great fun watching someone take over a game when everything is on the line. He has a top burst off the edge and also had some success with rushing the passer up the middle. I like the way A&M; use him he moves around and does drop in coverage some so he projects well to the 3-4 although he might be a little light for some systems. Utah RB Matt Asiata can be a little slow to get going, but has power and is tough to tackle. Week 11 wasn’t the best game for him as Utah were trailing and thus weren’t looking to run the ball that much in the second half. Colorado CB Jimmy Smith is very comfortable in man to man coverage he’s very physical at the line on a number of occasions he was able to disrupt the timing of plays with his physicality. He has a nice back pedal and can break out of it quickly. He’s also a reliable and physical tackler who came up and got involved in the run game a bunch. Further down the field he’s still physical so he will have to adjust to the 5 yard contact rule at the next level but he’s able to get himself in good position and then turn for the ball. Sure fire first round pick… ( full article )

For someone who doesn’t start, Michigan State WR Mark Dell is a legitimate pro prospect and he looked every inch of that in week 8. Dell has good size at 6’2″, 200 lbs and he also moved well in this one getting separation in his routes consistently he also looked to have some power after the catch. He was able to set his man up nicely on double moves catching a TD in this manner and also a 18 yard post-corner route. He caught most of his receptions with his hands away from his body but I thought he fought the ball a little on two of his receptions… ( full article )

bruce carter In terms of his inability to get off blocks consistently, I’m not as high on North Carolina OLB Carter as others are but he is certainly one of the best tacklers this year consistently wrapping up with good form and power. He has good range and is good in coverage but as soon as he gets a body on him he’s generally controlled and that’s a real concern. October 14th 2010
drake nevis LSU DT Drake Nevis is a fast rising prospect making the most of his increased playing time and he could very well find himself taken in the first round come 2011. He was dominant in the first half this week particularly coming up with two sacks and camping out in the Florida backfield. His quick burst off the ball will appeal to 4-3 teams and I would imagine his 10 yard split time in the 40 yard dash at the combine will be quick.
