NCAA Scouting All Undrafted Team by Paul Emery May 3rd 2011
Now we are back in lockout mode, teams will have to wait to sign undrafted players but with a ton of talent still out there, I feel it’s worth keeping some of these prospects in the spotlight and publishing an All Undrafted Team.
Offense
QB: Adam Weber Minnesota. Weber was on a poor Minnesota team but I think he’s got some talent.
RB: Derrick Locke Kentucky. Locke might even have day two talent but he’s struggled to stay healthy and I am assuming this caused him to fall out of the Draft all together. He can help in the return game and has game breaking ability surely he will be a popular target when the lockout ends.
FB: Henry Hynoski Pittsburgh. More like a third Guard a big kid who isn’t super fast, but is fun to watch him get after it.
WR: Terrence Toliver LSU. An ideal West Coast type receiver he has had problems with his hands, but has flashed top ability and is a fine athlete. Usually the type the NFL falls in love with are we seeing a move more to production (Pettis/Salas etc.) than potential?
WR: Armon Binns Cincinnati. With the Bearcats struggling he seemed to be off the radar but he’s been productive and has good size an ideal possession receiver.
TE: Charlie Gantt Michigan State. Not the best athlete in the world, but has two way TE potential although with Lance Kendricks in the second round, is this going the way of the FB?
OT: Jarriel King South Carolina. King’s Senior year was one to forget but in terms of athletic ability and flexibility he’s got potential at the Left Tackle position, which to me should have been worth a draft pick.
OT: Lee Ziemba Auburn. I saw Ziemba mentioned in terms of the top 100, so a surprise he’s undrafted. A Right Tackle prospect who can get to the second level very well.
OG: Justin Boren Ohio State. Wasn’t always super consistent, but showed enough to be drafted for me.
OG: Ricky Henry Nebraska. I wasn’t hugely surprised Henry wasn’t drafted as his combine numbers weren’t great. But he’s a tough kid who was used as a pulling Guard by Nebraska to great effect.
C: Alex Linnenkohl Oregon State. Kris O’Dowd draws consideration, but overall I like Linnenkohl better. He didn’t play as well down the stretch but early season he looked very good.
Defense
DE: Ugo Chinasa Oklahoma State. Super long arms and flashed pass rush ability I thought the Raiders would be all over Chinasa.
DE: Pierre Allen Nebraska. Not the best athlete, but showed he can set the edge and offer some pass rush.
DT: Martin Parker Richmond. Small schooler is a one gap penetrator his Combine numbers say he should have been drafted as does his tape.
DT: John Graves Virginia Tech. Lacks ideal size, but is quick off the ball more of a Colts type but has talent.
3-4 NT Ian Williams Notre Dame. A late season knee injury may have been the thing that had him falling to the realms of the undrafted but his play wasn’t deserving of this status.
3-4 DE Brandon Bair Oregon. Needs to add 15-20 lbs but has the length for the position. He had some buzz about him in the media, but clearly teams didn’t want to make the long term investment in him.
OLB: Mark Herzlich Boston College. I know he’s not super fast and I know the cancer coming back is a concern but this kid not being drafted makes me despair about the NFL. If Tim Tebow’s intangibles made him a first round pick, then surely Herzlich was worth at least a seventh round pick? Simply put, of all the prospects in the Draft, he was the number one I want this kid in my locker room type and he might not run super fast, but he can play too.
OLB: Jeremiha Hunter Iowa. Had the advantage of playing behind a top college defensive line but flashed ability to read and react. Wasn’t consistent though which seems to have cost him.
ILB: Nick Bellore Central Michigan. Bellore didn’t run fast at the Combine, but plays faster than that timed speed. Will upgrade special teams coverage units at the very least.
CB: Kendric Burney North Carolina. One of Mike Mayock’s favourites short and slow but was the best CB at the Senior Bowl.
CB: Devon Torrence Ohio State. Another slow CB but is bigger than Burney. Ideal Cover 2 type who flashed ability in college.
SS: Joe Lefeged Rutgers. A shorter than ideal type who has good speed and can also help as a kick returner. Limited as an in the box Safety which may be vanishing from defenses who are in the nickel more often these days.
FS: Deunta Williams North Carolina. Broke his leg in the Bowl game and thus went undrafted but this injury should clear up and prior to that he showed a top burst to the ball. Could prove to be the steal of the undrafted class to whoever signs him.
Special Teams
PK: Thomas Weber Arizona State. Had some inconsistencies as a Senior, but gets good height on his kicks and has a big leg.
P: Chas Henry Florida. As predicted no Punters were drafted, so my top rated punter wins here.
