Chris Brophy’s 2010 1st Round Mock Draft V2.0
Updated 11th March
by Chris Brophy
11/3/2010

With free agency now underway and teams filling needs via that medium the landscape has changed somewhat so it’s time to get guessing again and throw out another mock draft in the aftermath. Read on to see who we think your team is picking.

1, St Louis Rams: Sam Bradford QB Oklahoma
With the signing of AJ Feeley to do a babysitting job and the announcement from ESPN reporter Adam Schetfer that he is willing to take bets on the Rams taking Bradford it does now look like the vogue pick. The Rams have invested heavily in both lines with high picks in recent years, they now need to start getting top notch skill players and no position is more vital than QB. Bradford is separating himself as the #1 guy at the position and he is now a real contender to be the overall number one pick.

2, Detroit Lions: Russell Okung OT Oklahoma State
If Bradford goes number one that leaves the Lions with the dream choice of either McCoy or Suh at #2, right? Well, that is correct but the Lions have gone out in free agency and added former Jim Schwartz pupil Kyle Vanden Bosch as well as trading for the unsettled Corey Williams to their defensive line so it’s time to protect last year’s high priced investment Matthew Stafford with a blue chip offensive tackle and Okung is that guy.

Gerald McCoy 3, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Gerald McCoy* DT Oklahoma
A dream situation then for the Buccaneers who really need D-line help. Suh might rate the better player overall but McCoy looks like he can be more disruptive as a pass rusher and Tampa’s defense needs someone on the line who can force opposing QB’s into mistakes.

4, Washington Redskins: Trent Williams OT Oklahoma
The Redskins would have liked Bradford or Okung to be here and they might still consider the likes of Suh , Clausen or Berry. However, the recent addition of Ma’ake Kemoeatu shores up the NT need and with the QB options extremely thin it looks more and more likely that Jason Campbell will get his chance under Mike Shanahan so with that in mind protecting him is vital and Trent Williams good combine performance and athletic abilities will prove too hard to pass over.

5, Kansas City Chiefs: Eric Berry S – Tennessee
I think they’d love a LT and they could be tempted to get ahead of the Redskins and make sure they get one but in this situation that’s not possible so they take Eric Berry and enjoy 10-12 years of big plays in their defensive backfield.

6, Seattle Seahawks: Ndamukong Suh DT Nebraska
They want a QB but Jimmy Clausen doesn’t appear a natural fit and they would like an heir apparent to Walter Jones at LT but two have shot off this board so they go for value and help improve their run defense dramatically by plumping for Suh who can help the Seahawks defend the likes of Frank Gore and Steven Jackson in their division.

7, Cleveland Browns: Dez Bryant* WR Oklahoma State
The Browns could well look to move down but assuming they don’t, they need some impact players on offense having dealt away Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow as well as losing Jamal Lewis to retirement, so Bryant makes sense although I think top ten is a bit high for him a he carries risks.

8, Oakland Raiders: Bruce Campbell* – OT Maryland
Workout warrior and a star of the recent combine will have Al Davis falling in love with his measurable. His level of play is not really worthy of being taken this high but at least he fills a need and if they don’t take an OT here, likely by the time they pick again in round 2 the cupboard is bare.

9, Buffalo Bills: Jason Pierre-Paul* – DE South Florida
QB or OT seems the pick around many mocks but with the move to a 3-4 and Chan Gailey likely to employ a few differences on offense, I think they seriously consider boasting their pass rush. Aaron Schobel is in his mid-30’s and no one else really gets to the passer regularly so Pierre-Paul is not only good value here but a good fit for the long term future.

10, Jacksonville Jaguars: Joe Hadan CB Florida
Oh no! He only ran 4.57 at the combine! He’s going to drop like a stone! I actually think the Jaguars need to make sure they get Tim Tebow not just for football reasons – but it’s too high here so they will want to move down and the OT market could find them a suitor. However, if they stand pat Hadan is a solid choice as his stock should recover if he can run better times at his pro day. Deion Sanders, who knows a thing or two about speed, was all over how poor his starting stance was at the combine and that surely effected his times.

11, Denver Broncos (from Bears): Jimmy Clausen* – QB Notre Dame
Kyle Orton is ok but I doubt he is ever going to be great. With McDaniels moving away from the old Denver ways to a more power based offense he could serious consider a QB who has worked under his former colleague in New England Charlie Weis.

12, Miami Dolphins: Earl Thomas S Texas
Antrel Rolle was expected by many to return to his home state in free agency but he took the Giants money and ran so the Dolphins still have a whole to fill in the defensive backfield. They’d love a receiver (TO anyone, Parcells had him in Dallas!) also but no one is worthy of the choice here so they get a playmaking safety who won’t let the dangerous receivers of the AFC East get behind him.

13, San Francisco 49ers: Anthony Davis* OT Rutgers
They still need O-line help and get it here with Davis who is big and powerful and should be able to help lead Frank Gore to many more good rushing days whilst also protecting whoever the 49ers go with at QB.

14, Seattle Seahawks (from Broncos): Bryan Bulaga* – OT Iowa
After addressing one line with their other first rounder they get help here for the other side of the ball. Pete Carroll would love to add an offensive weapon like CJ Spiller or get help at safety with USC old boy Taylor Mays but the OT pool is evaporating pretty quick so the ‘Hawks nab Walter Jones replacement while the going is good.

15, New York Giants: Dan Williams DT Tennessee
Now that they have addressed their concerns at safety by signing over half of New York to Rolle in a big fat contract they can address the rest of the middle of the defense. They could very well consider Rolando McClain to replace Antonio Pierce at MLB but with Fred Robbins moving on they decide to keep filling their defensive line with quality and bring in Williams.

16, San Francisco 49ers (from Panthers): CJ Spiller RB Clemson
Frank Gore is a tough, work horse back but he needs a compliment and Spiller can be it. Add in he adds value as a return man and as a receiving threat and he brings explosion to the 49ers offense and return game. Spiller and Gore could emerge as one of the great running duos in the league if this works out well.

17, Tennessee Titans: Derrick Morgan* DE Georgia Tech
The Titans have lost too much on the defensive line in recent off-seasons to overcome and need to add an influx of talent back along it so it could be either Morgan or local product Dan Williams with this pick.

Rolando McClain 18, Pittsburgh Steelers: Rolando McClain* LB Alabama
The Steelers could use Rolando McClain as he can be called on to replace the aging James Farrior in time but at this point, it’s hard to tell how hard the revelation that he has Crohn’s disease will effect his stock.

19, Atlanta Falcons: Brandon Graham DE – Michigan
Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff values high value positions in the top rounds so DE makes sense after addressing the likes of QB and OT in recent years. The Falcons pass rush needs a boast and Graham impressed at the combine where he had added some bulk but still managed to show good speed.

20, Houston Texans: Mike Iupati OG Idaho
The Texans seem to have been building an offensive line since day one of their inception without any success. The building continues here with the best guard in the draft.

21, Cincinnati Bengals: Taylor Mays S USC
They could use a safety and Marv Lewis has a track record of drafting players from USC so it just so happens that Mays fills a need in the defensive backfield. His track like speed has done enough to stop his stock falling away any further. A receiver is a need but Antonio Bryant is close to signing at the time of writing.

22, New England Patriots: Jermaine Gresham TE – Oklahoma
At present the Patriots have no tight end s on the roster and with Ben Watson doing the rounds with other teams as a free agent and Chris Baker gone, it’s a major need and a position they would like to get more involved in the offense. Gresham couldn’t improve his stock due to injury last season but he has all the tools to be something special and the Patriots have take TE’s in the first round before. Of course, they’ll likely do what they always do, trade down, add picks for the following year and still address the position they want to.

23, Green Bay Packers: Kyle Wilson CB Boise State
Charles Woodson is currently the leagues DMVP but is 34 years old. Al Harris is coming off a serious knee injury and is not getting any younger so Wilson makes a lot of sense. He can be worked into the rotation also offer the return game a boost.

24, Philadelphia Eagles: Everett Griffin DE – USC
They were players in the Julius Peppers stakes and also wanted to take a peek at Aaron Kampman so there is no doubt the Eagles want some additions on the defensive line and they have always restocked their lines via the draft so this pick makes a lot of sense.

25, Baltimore Ravens: Jared Odrick DT Penn State
The Ravens have filled a big need with the addition of Anquan Boldin so now they can turn their attention to defense. Cornerback is a strong possibility but with Trevor Pryce and Kelly Gregg getting on someone to help in the rotation and then take on more work in the future makes sense so aboard comes. Odrick has a few character concerns after an arrest last year but he has a non-stop motor and the potential to play any spot on a 3 man line.

26, Arizona Cardinals: Devin McCourty CB – Rutgers
They have suffered a few loses from free agency but have acted with a trade for Kerry Rhodes and I suspect they believe they have the talent already on board to replace Boldin so they use this pick to fill a need at corner and in McCourty they get a guy who really helped his cause to break into round one at the combine. He also could add a dimension as a return man.

27, Dallas Cowboys: Charles Brown OT USC
Hotel Adams is just about to go out of business so it’s time to get a replacement and if they don’t take Brown here, the picking are very slim afterwards.

28, San Diego Chargers: Terrance Cody NT – Alabama
They need a running back but you can have instance success lower down in the draft at that position so they fill their need at DL. With Jamal Williams now in Denver and Ian Scott certainly not the answer they take a chance on Terrance Cody who at least showed some effort to trim up a touch at the combine. He probably doesn’t deserve to go this high but need and the importance of the position means he sneaks into round one.

29, New York Jets: Sergio Kindle OLB/DE – Texas
The Jets still need pass rush help and Kindle can offer that opposite Calvin Pace. It’s a need I would fully expect them to address in the top couple of rounds of this draft.

30, Minnesota Vikings: Maurkice Pouncey OC/G – Florida
The interior line needs some help to make holes for the ultra-dangerous Adrian Peterson. They could well go defensive line or defensive back to.

31, Indianapolis Colts: Brian Price DT UCLA
Williams is an excellent run stopper and that has looked like it could be the Colts weakness at times. He’s the perfect complement to the edge rush of Freeney and Mathis.

32, New Orleans Saints: Sean Weatherspoon LB – Missouri
With Scott Fujita off to the Cleveland Browns the Saints can find his replacement in this draft with Weatherspoon, a smart player who will tackle forever and a day. DL and LB look to be the draft day priorities.
