NCAA Scouting Fifth Round Analysis by Paul Emery April 25th 2010
(132) Rams Michael Hoomanawanui TE Illinois excellent blocker who could also be used as a pass protector to keep the number one pick clean.
(133) Seahawks (From Lions) Kam Chancellor – S – Virginia Tech moves very well for his size lacks ability to cover man to man but should be fine in the box and form a nice pairing with first round pick Earl Thomas. Possible WLB convert.
(134) Eagles (From Buccaneers through Browns) Ricky Sapp DE/OLB Clemson under sized for a 4-3 DE might be looked at as a SLB. Has pass rush ability.
(135) Falcons (From Redskins through Rams) – Dominique Franks – CB Oklahoma rated by many in the first three rounds but is a straight liner who lacks top size.
(136) Chiefs – Kendrick Lewis – FS Mississippi one of the best special teams coverage prospects in this Draft. At Safety he could be a tweener too slow for FS not big enough for SS.
(137) Broncos (From Browns through Eagles) – Perrish Cox – CB – Oklahoma State after making a big deal about character with picks like Tebow and Beadles this is a surprising pick. Has off the field concerns which dropped him. Physical press type who lacks top end speed.
(138) Raiders – Walter McFadden – CB Auburn wiry CB who ran a nice 40 time at his pro day. But he showed up big time on tape, so he’s more than a workout warrior and I really like the pick.
(139) Jets (From Seahawks) – John Conner – FB Kentucky throw back FB big and physical ideal for those December and hopefully January days in New York when the Jets need to run the ball.
(140) Bills Ed Wang – OT – Virginia Tech the Bills leave it late to take an OT a major need. I don’t see Wang as the answer he can’t handle edge speed. RT only, may have to kick inside to G.
(141) Bears – Joshua Moore – CB – Kansas State another CB who lacks top end speed similar pick to DJ Moore last year, but didn’t flash as much on tape.
(142) Chiefs (From Dolphins) Cameron Sheffield DE/OLB Troy a solid type who lacks a top burst off the edge. Has good size to match up against a TE.
(143) Jaguars – Larry Hart – DE – Central Arkansas was being viewed as a 3-4 OLB type could be viewed as a smaller DE or converted to LB unless the Jags continue to use the 3-4 at times. Should help on special teams.
(144) Texans (From Panthers through Chiefs) Sherrick McManis – CB Northwestern physical CB who has decent, but not top end speed. Should push the likes of Fred Bennett.
(145) Dolphins (From 49ers) Nolan Carroll – CB Maryland has the speed to match up man to man. Has durability concerns.
(146) Chargers (From Broncos through Lions, Browns and Eagles) Cam Thomas NT – North Carolina one of few NT prospects, who has fallen despite this. Doesn’t show up much on tape but has all the tools for the position. Boom or bust but at this point, it’s a good gamble.
(147) Giants – Mitch Petrus – OG – Arkansas Combine strong man has good technique and once he locks onto you, it’s all over. Not a top athlete, but finally a Giants pick that I like!
(148) Titans Robert Johnson FS Utah great value in a deep FS class. Has good range and can hit comes from a poor background, but is no concern off the field. Can step in and help on special teams and could be a starter down the road. Super pick.
(149) Rams (From Falcons) Hall Davis DE – Louisiana-Lafayette Davis gave LSU’s Ciron Black a tough time this season lacks top explosion off the edge, but does have ability. Solid value.
(150) Patriots (From Texans) – Zoltan Mesko – P Michigan left footed, which can give problems to returners. Very inconsistent not in my top 3 rated punters as a result. Need pick.
(151) Steelers Chris Scott OT/OG – Tennessee after success with UFA Ramon Foster last year, the Steelers go back to Tennessee and take a similar type. Scott played LT but projects inside big mauler.
(152) Bengals – Otis Hudson – OG – Eastern Illinois my first who moment research reveals a raw prospect who had a fine pro day.
(153) Jaguars (From Patriots through Buccaneers and Raiders) – Austen Lane – DE – Murray State hard worker who fell, so is a good value pick here. Has some pass rush ability needs to handle the step up in competition but is a solid pick.
(154) Packers – Andrew Quarless – TE – Penn State character concerns drop this talented young man. Flashes excellent receiving ability (see one handed catch at the Shrine Game) but has only done it for one year. Boom or bust but worth it at this stage.
(155) Cardinals (From Eagles through Jets and Steelers) John Skelton – QB Fordham has classic QB size and a great arm. Needs to learn a pro offense and some touch. Has all the tools.
(156) Ravens – David Reed – WR Utah an interesting prospect who only started one year at Utah. Has good hands and decent speed.
(157) Ravens (From Cardinals) Arthur Jones DT Syracuse nice scheme fit has had durability concerns, but if he can stay healthy this looks like a super pick.
(158) Saints (From Cowboys through Patriots, Broncos, Raiders, and Jaguars) – Matt Tennant OG/OC – Boston College did anyone want to make this pick? Six teams owned it at some point! Saints finally took Tennant who many saw as a Second Round pick. Is too tall for Center so is a Guard for me but lacks top strength there. May be a classic tweener and is the reason he fell.
(159) Eagles (From Chargers) Riley Cooper – WR Florida character concerns dropped Cooper also a baseball prospect. Has decent speed, but drops too many balls.
(160) Browns (From Jets) Larry Asante – SS Nebraska I like this pick far better than T.J. Ward on Day Two. Has had injury problems, but always showed up on tape. Will be a special teams demon at worst.
(161) Vikings Chris Degeare OG – Wake Forest played T in college, but projects to G as a pro. Has decent flexibility and is a sound pick.
(162) Colts Brody Eldridge – TE Oklahoma Jack of all trades, master of none. Eldridge has played TE, FB, G and C for the Sooners has had durability concerns, but projects as a blocking TE. A further effort to help the running game.
(163) Dolphins (From Rams through Saints, Eagles and Redskins) Reshad Jones – SS Georgia a lighter version of Taylor Mays flashes some good closing speed, but takes too many bad angles and misses tackles. Should show up on special teams.
(164) Steelers (Compensatory selection) – Crezdon Butler – CB Clemson better than many of the smaller/slower CB’s who have already come off the board. Does get beaten some on tape, but also flashes ability. Overall, a good pick at this stage.
(165) Falcons (Compensatory selection) Kerry Meier WR Kansas former QB who moved to WR. Lacks top speed, but has decent hands smart player might just stick.
(166) Steelers (Compensatory selection) Stevenson Sylvester – ILB – Utah – Sylvester is a read and react type who lacks the bulk to play inside in a 3-4 but he does have long arms, so can grow into the position. Can help on special teams while bulking up. Could turn out to be a decent pick down the road.
(167) Vikings (Compensatory selection) Nathan Triplett – OLB – Minnesota was a special teams standout in college before starting as a Senior. Hard worker who will make a living on special teams.
(168) Chargers (Compensatory selection) Jonathan Crompton – QB Tennessee had a decent second half to his Senior year played well enough to be drafted. Accuracy is a question mark particularly in the pocket under pressure.
(169) Packers (Compensatory selection) Marshall Newhouse OG – TCU played LT in college and projects inside a poor man’s Bulaga really.
Summary
Best Pick: Robert Johnson FS Titans. Always pay attention to Day Three types at those positions considered deep and FS applies this year. Has great range and is a good character type, who could become a top player.
Worst Pick: Ed Wang OT Bills. Partly because they need help at T and I can’t see Wang providing it struggled against speed off the edge and isn’t anywhere near as good as Jamon Meredith a 2nd year player on the Bills roster.
Best Value: Arthur Jones DT Syracuse it’s tough to find DT’s with the length to handle a 3-4 front and although Jones has durability issues, I think he has top 100 talent.
Worst Value: Zoltan Mesko P Patriots. Is used to kicking in cold weather, but wasn’t consistent enough for me to warrant such a high pick.
Surprise: No one has yet gambled on Greg Hardy who has top 10 talent.
