NFL Draft 2008NCAA Scouting – Player Profile:
DaJuan Morgan, S
by Jody Jamieson
1/4/2008

Morgan is yet another player in this year’s draft to forego their senior year. However I have question marks about that decision and I am of the opinion that he should have held on for a year and come back for the draft in ’09. Morgan was a High School wide receiver, who was converted to safety in his freshman year. Is still rather raw in the position but may have come out due to the fact that the safety position is so weak this year that he could be a high pick.

DaJuan Morgan Morgan may be banking on perfecting his trade in the NFL, but it is a cut throat world in the pros and Morgan will likely be just a special teamer in the rookie year. He is a stud special teamer and should be effective in this role. Morgan may yet end up being the best safety in this draft in a long-term capacity, but any team looking for a polished safety may want to bypass Morgan. Those willing to spend some time on this project may reap some long-term benefits as he certainly has the potential to be very good. This will very much be a boom or bust selection for someone.

What we like about Morgan

Morgan is a physical and aggressive safety who is a big hitter. He will quite happily push up into the box in run support and will be effective in that role. Instinctive and makes good decisions, Morgan isn’t the type to be burned by the play-action pass. He has very good hands to come up and make the INT. As mentioned before, he is far from the finished article, so could get a lot better than he already is.

Question marks about Morgan

I suppose the biggest question mark would be about his potential. He is most certainly a project, but a lot will depend on how much better he will get. Only started one year in college so it’s really a tough one to evaluate how effective he will be in the pros. While Morgan is a big hitter, he occasionally goes for the big hit a little too much when he should really wrap someone up.

Highlight of his college career

In Morgan’s Junior season (his only season as a full time starter) he led North Carolina State in tackles with 97. Despite limited time at safety in ’06, Morgan did snag a game winning interception late on against FSU.

Other snippets

  • Various combine stats: 21 reps in the bench press, 4.54 sec 40 yard dash/

  • When asked by nfl.com what his team mates don’t know about him, DaJuan told the world he likes to write poetry in his spare time.

  • Many mocks have Morgan going either late in the second round, or early in the third.

  • I fancy Detroit, St Louis or Cincinnati to look at Morgan as a long term answer to a troublesome position.
