NFL Draft 2009NCAA Scouting
2009 NFL Draft
2nd Round Review
by Jody Jamieson
27/4/2009

33. Detroit Lions Louis Delmas

I had an interesting theory that perhaps with the Lions being so bad on defense last year that they might go all offense in the draft to at least tune up one part of their team and give up on trying to get their defense right for now. But this is the problem right here. The Lions have 3 of the first 33 picks, and they have a chance to pick a franchise quarterback, a franchise left tackle, and the best defensive player on the board. They got part one right but didnt bother to address the possibility of giving their $78 million dollar investment some protection. Now with Ray Maualuga and James Laurinitis on the board, they cant take the safety. And thats nothing against Delmas.

34. New England Patriots Patrick Chung

Not really where I expected Chung to go, but with a multitude of second round picks to play with, the Patriots can afford to reach to make sure they get their guy. Chung can project well to play free or strong and could be the long term replacement for Rodney Harrison.

35. St Louis Rams James Laurinitis

The Rams are having a nice draft as they prosper from the Lions futility. St Louis couldnt possibly have thought theyd have their choice of Laurinitis or Maualuga here, but thats the way this draft is going. If the stupidity lasts, they may get Maualuga in the 3rd.

36. Cleveland Browns Brian Robiskie

brian robiskieThey should probably have gone defense here, but receiver is a real need and Robiskie has a chance to become a really good one. Even if Braylon Edwards does stay, they need to replace Stallworth who is likely to be unavailable in 2009.

37. Denver Broncos Alphonso Smith

Denver make their first sensible decision of the off season. No not the pick, but they traded Chicagos 2010 first round pick instead of their own! If theyd given up their own, Seattle would have been picking top 10 next year. I like Smith, but Im not sure Id give a future first to take him here. Its one of those where Seattle really couldnt turn this down.

38. Cincinnati Bengals Ray Maualuga

Its an amazing day when the Bengals profit from everyone elses nonsense. Maualuga is a first round talent being taken at 38 at a position of need for Cincy. Their defense really came onto a game at the end of the season last year, so adding Maualuga here to play MIKE is a great pick up.

39. Jacksonville Jaguars Eben Britton

This really surprised me. Britton is as excellent talent, but why spend free agent money on William Thomas if youre going to take two offensive tackles with your first two picks? Obviously Thomas is a veteran so it makes sense long term, but was definitely surprised they went this way.

40. New England Patriots Ron Brace

And while futile teams like Denver pass over needs, the Patriots take good players to add depth. Youd think Josh McDaniels would have learned something from Bill Belichick when he was in New England. Brace can add great depth on the defensive line incase of an injury, and can slot in as the long term replacement for Richard Seymour.

41. New England Patriots Darius Butler

Wow, a team drafting good players in positions of need? Well I never! The Patriots will never finish under .500 again. New England needed corners, and they took a good one here at pick 41. Belichick is solid as ever on draft day.

42. Buffalo Bills Jairus Bird

Ha ha ha ha ha! What are they doing?! This is a ridiculous pick. Not only are they not picking for glaring need, but theyre picking mid round prospects in the second round. I thought the Bills were close last offseason, but days like this will ensure they remain a sub .500 team in a tough division for another year.

43. Carolina Panthers Everette Brown

Im never a fan of trading a future first to make a pick in the current second round, but how did Everette Brown last this long? Carolina wont pick in the first round in 2010 again, but at least added a really good prospect who can get to the quarterback. I love the pick, but Im a little sceptical of what they gave up.

44. Miami Dolphins Pat White

pat whiteWhy didnt I see this coming? Maybe it was too much of a clich pick to send the slash player to the kings of the Wildcat, but this is a good pick. White can make an impact right away in the Wildcat and when Chad Pennington breaks down again, its between White and Henne to come in and replace him.

45. New York Giants Clint Sintim

Its amazing that a team with no major needs like the Giants are having much better drafts than teams like Detroit, Denver and Buffalo who have obvious needs. Sintim will be yet another headache for offensive linemen in the NFC East who already have to deal with Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora.

46. Houston Texans Connor Barwin

This seems a little like hedging your bets, but Barwin can do more than just play linebacker. Barwin can play defensive end and even fit in on offense. Barwin has versatility and a lot of potential so this could end up a steal for the Texans.

47. Oakland Raiders Michael Mitchell

This is the worst pick Ive ever seen. Maybe 30 years ago taking guys from small schools no-one had heard of made sense, but nowadays with all the coverage of the draft and the exposure even the small school players get, theres no need for this. Theres a reason no-one had heard of this guy other than Al Davis.

48. Denver Broncos Darcel McBath

Josh McDaniels should be fired on the spot. This is almost worse than the Michael Mitchell pick. Denvers defense is going to be awful again this year, but hey at least they have loads and loads of depth at safety! Mike Shanahan would have been sitting at home watching the draft laughing his head off. Even Shanahan, who ignored defense the last few years, knew how to build a defense better than McDaniels.

49. Seattle Seahawks Max Unger

Seattle should have taken him at 37, but Denver gave them a deal they couldnt turn down. Luckily for them Unger is still there 12 picks later and while everyone else makes crazy picks, Seattle add good prospects in positions of need.

50. Cleveland Browns Mohamed Massaquoi

I give up. What a terrible, terrible pick. Why are they picking another receiver (and not even a particularly good one I gave Massaquoi a 6th round grade) in round two when their defense cant stop anyone? If youre a gambler, take the over on how many points will be scored in every Browns game in 2009 because theyre not stopping anyone.

51. Buffalo Bills Andy Levitre

andy levitreThe Bills are running the ball on every single down this year. They still havent addressed their problematic left tackle position, but have added two impressive interior linemen (if they did reach for Wood) and Marshawn Lynch must be delighted. Trent Edwards on the other hand must be concerned about his safety.

52. Cleveland Browns David Veikune

Cleveland finally draft defense, and they cant even get that right. Veikune is a mid round prospect who probably projects better to the 4-3 than the 3-4. With Michael Johnson and Fili Moala there, this pick sucks.

53. Philadelphia Eagles LeSean McCoy

For once, I cant question Andy Reid on draft day. They need a running back, and McCoy could have been taken in the first round. Getting him at 53 is value. Maybe hes too similar to Westbrook, but the Eagles are drafting to replace him rather than to create a one-two punch.

54. Minnesota Vikings Phil Loadholt

This instantly makes the Harvin pick better. They get a good player in a position of major need, and thus it justifies the luxury pick in round 1. Adrian Peterson could run for 2,000 yards if hes healthy.

55. Atlanta Falcons William Moore

Yet again teams at the end of the round are getting picks than the teams at the top. Atlanta have a major hole at safety, and they address it here with a really good pickup. Moore will likely play from day 1 and is an upgrade already. Pencil in the Falcons for the 2010 NFC Championship game.

56. Indianapolis Colts Fili Moala

The Colts take a player in a position of need that really shouldnt still be on the board. They desperately need defensive line starters and Moala can be plugged in immediately. Love this pick.

57. Baltimore Ravens Paul Kruger

Kruger and Robert Ayers were two of my favourite 4-3 defensive ends in this draft, so Im disappointed that both went to 3-4 teams. I dont know if Kruger has the versatility to play in the 3-4. They should really have gone receiver here in my eyes.

58. New England Patriots Sebastian Vollmer

If youre going to reach, at least reach in a position of need. I dont know a lot about Vollmer, but the Patriots needed a right tackle and this might work. Belichick does this a lot and it tends to work. I would probably slate the pick if I knew more about him, but I trust the Pats.

59. Carolina Panthers Sherrod Martin

Reaching at a position of need. Martin never impressed me much, and with Sean Smith still on the board, Im surprised they went this direction.

60. New York Giants William Beatty

william beattyHow did this happen? Detroit should have taken Beatty at #20. Buffalo had numerous chances to take him. Maybe he didnt run a fast enough 40 time for the Raiders. Beatty isnt even a need for the Giants, but theyre not stupid. When you can get a left tackle this good in the second round, you dont pass him up, unless youre stupid. That explains why hes still there. Yet again good teams get better while useless teams with earlier picks make ridiculous decisions.

61. Miami Dolphins Sean Smith

This is getting ridiculous. Team are reaching for other defensive backs (Im looking at you Buffalo, Oakland and Carolina), and Sean Smith falls nicely to the Dolphins. He had a chance to sneak into the first round, so the value is excellent here.

62. Tennessee Titans SenDerrick Marks

Yet another player who falls to a good team later than he should. Marks is brought in as a replacement for Albert Haynesworth. Its unrealistic to expect him to be as productive as Albert, but he can fit nicely into the DT rotation.

63. Arizona Cardinals Cody Brown

Maybe a bit of a reach, but Brown was a nice sleeper pick of mine and Im happy he went in the second round. He has a lot of scheme versatility, so its a great fit that hes gone to a team that shows a lot of different fronts on defense. Cardinals seem to understand the draft after many years of doing a 2009 Denver Broncos.

64. Denver Broncos Richard Quinn

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha! Bring back Shanahan!! Why are they trading up to take a BLOCKING tight end when they have one of the worst defenses ever? Denver would go 2-14 next year if they werent lucky enough to play in the same division as Oakland and Kansas City. San Diego might aswell start resting their players in October.
