NCAA Scouting – Player Profile: Juaquin Iglesias, WR, Oklahoma by Jody Jamieson 27/2/2009
With Juaquin Iglesias on one side, Malcolm Kelly on the other, and Jermaine Gresham at tight end, you have a dynamic passing offense. Put the ball in Sam Bradford’s hands, and you’ve got an offense which is almost unstoppable. Iglesias was mostly in the shadow of Malcolm Kelly at OU, but he actually had more catches and yards in 2007 with 68 catches, 907 yards and 5 touchdowns. Kelly went for 49 and 821, but did have 9 TD’s. Kelly of course was a second round pick of the Washington Redskins and had a tough rookie year with injuries, and never really saw much playing time. Iglesias is a talented guy who can be a second round pick in April. The problem is he’s a solid guy who does a lot of things to a good level, but really does nothing to a great level.
Iglesias strikes you as the type of receiver who will be fairly productive, quite consistent, but definitely not a game changer. He compares favourably with a guy like Patrick Crayton or Anthony Gonzalez. He’s never going to be a number one receiver, but can be a great compliment to a dynamic receiver and could be a guy you can rely on to be a solid number 2 receiver who’ll make catches and move the chains. I like him to be most effective as a slot receiver, but that depends on the talent of receiver on the team he is drafted too.
What we like about Iglesias
Extremely smooth route runner with good speed and is quite a shifty runner. Doesn’t have elite timed speed, but is dangerous with the ball in his hands and gets yards after the catch. Has a nice stutter step. Tough competitor who plays hard and fights for the extra yard. Willing to go over the middle and take a hit to secure the catch. Was a clutch performer in college. Can be effective outside or in the slot.
Question marks about Iglesias
Is quick, but doesn’t have elite speed and isn’t particularly explosive. Won’t get a lot of separation in the pros and may struggle in press coverage. May have reached his ceiling. Isn’t a great blocker.
Highlight of his college career
Iglesias had an excellent senior year in a dynamic offense. He had 74 catches for 1,150 yards and 10 touchdowns as OU went all the way to the National Championship Game, where they were defeated 24-14 by Florida. Iglesias had 5 catches for 58 yards against the Gators.
Other snippets
6′ 1″ tall and weighed in at 210 lbs at the NFL Combine. Ran a disappointing 4.56 40 at the Combine. The earliest I think he’ll be selected is at #53 by the New York Jets, which would be a nice fit. Look for Baltimore, Carolina and Tennessee to be potential destinations at the end of the second round.
