NCAA Scouting Dang and Doc’s 2010 1st Round Mock Draft V1.0 Updated 22nd February 2010 by Brian Davis & Paul Hopkins 22/2/2010 Pre-Combine edition 1 St Louis Rams Ndamukong Suh DT, Nebraska With the first overall pick, the Rams have to decide whether they go with the best player in the draft or take one of the two QB’s. They’ll play it safe. They’ve invested many draft picks of late in both lines, with varied results. This one pays off. 2 Detroit Lions Gerald McCoy DT, Oklahoma The Lions can’t lose in this draft. Whatever happens they’re happy to sit here safe in the knowledge that unless someone offers them a bounty for the pick, they’ll fill a major need with a top-class talent. 3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Eric Berry S, Tennessee The Buccs have many gaps to fill and whilst it’s rare for a safety to go this high in the draft, Eric Berry is a sure fire thing. And in Raheem Mooris, a former secondary coach himself, he has someone ready to guide him into becoming a defensive leader. 4 Washington Redskins Russell Okung T, Oklahoma State And so the Mike Shanahan era begins. The Skins have two big gaps, under centre at QB and on an ageing offensive line. The smart money might be on a QB and whilst Campbell is not the QB of the future when you give him time and options he can be effective. Therefore shocks as the Skins go with Okung to protect Campbell in 2010 and someone else after that. If this works, then look possibly for a receiver to be drafted in the second. 5 Seattle Seahawks (from Kansas City) Jimmy Clausen QB, Notre Dame The first and only trade of this mock draft, sees not a lot of movement but a big point for many teams, and especially the Seahawks. As soon as the Skins pass on Clausen the Chiefs phone lights up with interested teams making enquiries forcing Seattle to act. Clausen is more of a Pete Carroll type QB than Sam Bradford, so the price to pay to secure Clausen is worthwhile. 6 Kansas City Chiefs (from Seattle) Bruce Campbell T, Maryland Clutching those extra picks from the Hawks, the Chiefs continue their rebuilding. Having invested heavily in Matt Cassel they look to protect him further. And of all the tackles who remain, arguably Campbell is not the most talented but he doesn’t bring any form of character issues some of the others do. They may be overblown but safety first for the Chiefs. 7 Cleveland Browns Anthony Davis T, Rutgers Assuming Eric Mangini doesn’t do what he did last year and trade down repeatedly, then the Browns have many holes to fill. Would they take Sam Bradford if he was there? How much of an influence is Mike Holmgren going to be and what direction does he want to take this team in? This is a real mock draft busting spot. We thought it came down to Davis or Joe Haden. The coin came down on shoring up the O-line giving them a pair of the best young tackles in the league. 8 Oakland Raiders Sam Bradford QB, Oklahoma And so we come to Al and the Raiders. Would he take Dez Bryant? Taylor Mays? Jason Pierre Paul will be a very strong consideration. But cooler heads may prevail. They’ve given up on Russell and need a QB. If Sam Bradford is there still surely they won’t not take him? 9 Buffalo Bills Dan Williams DT, Tennessee The Bills are another team with a lot of needs. Joe Haden is arguably the BPA at this point, but in a crowded secondary is that the biggest need? OT is a distinct possibility but with a few off the board and the move to a 3-4 on defence, Dan Williams offers them to chance to start building that with a strong foundation. 10 Jacksonville Jaguars Joe Haden CB, Florida The hot rumour is that the Jags may look at Florida’s favourite son Tim Tebow in a bid to boost attendances and revenue. But instead it’s another Gator who falls into their lap in a position of need. 11 Denver Broncos Dez Bryant WR, Oklahoma State Time for a receiver perhaps? With Brandon Marshall and Josh McDaniels’ relationship more like that you would find a soap opera, with a divorce a possibility this off-season the Broncos need to give Kyle Orton (assuming its him and) someone to get the ball to. They could probably do with Rolando McClain as well but Bryant is too good to pass over. 12 Miami Dolphins Rolando McClain ILB, Alabama The Fins and Broncos probably have the same two guys atop their draft boards so will be happy no matter who they get. McClain is a typical Bill Parcells pick and will offer Tony Sparano another defensive leader. 13 San Francisco 49ers CJ Spiller RB, Clemson The Niners play a guessing game over their two big needs some support for Frank Gore and a tackle for the offensive line. Looking at what may happen between now and #17, they go with the draft’s playmaker. 14 Seattle Seahawks Charles Brown T, USC You know that Pete Carroll is going to be looking at many of the guys who served him well at USC. Having procured his franchise QB in Clausen earlier, he needs someone he can trust to protect him. Brown is rising up draft boards and fits the bill perfectly. 15 New York Giants Brandon Graham DE, Michigan Osi Umeniyora says he is done in New York, and suddenly the Giants look to be in need of some additional support for their line. Whilst Jason Pierre Paul and Derrick Morgan offer just as much, Graham offers them to chance to work on his development which may see him end up at LB or DE. Given their liking for shuffling the pack on the line, Graham fits the bill. 16 Tennessee Titans Derrick Morgan DE, Georgia Tech The Titans also need a lot of help on the defensive line. Albert Haynesworth left, Kyle vanden Bosch is as good as gone and there’s little else. Perhaps a little surprised by the Giants pick just ahead of them, the Titans can’t believe their luck as Morgan drops into their lap. 17 San Francisco 49ers Brian Bulaga T, Iowa The Niners gamble pays off. Having taken a playmaker they now go and get someone to fight in the trenches. 18 Pittsburgh Steelers Trent Williams T, Oklahoma Can the Steelers believe their luck at this point? Ben Roethlisberger simply cannot continue to take the pounding that he gets these days. So a top tackle at #18? Mike Tomlin will have some of that. 19 Atlanta Falcons Earl Thomas S, Texas The Falcons need help in the secondary and Thomas offers some flexibility and options. 20 Houston Texans Jason Pierre-Paul DE, South Florida The Texans will probably be watching the Falcons pick with interest. If the Birds go elsewhere then Thomas has a distinct possibility to remain within the state. However, JPP the man who seemingly is polarising opinions is still there and is probably the best player available. Given their need for a RB to carry the load, don’t be completely amazed if they go for just that in Ryan Matthews of Fresno State. 21 Cincinnati Bengals Jermaine Gresham TE, Oklahoma During the post-season it became obvious further that the Bengals need that little bit more help in the receiving game. There are no receivers arguably worth having at this point, but the forgotten man who missed all of the 2009 season would give Carson Palmer a reliable weapon. 22 New England Patriots Jerry Hughes DE, TCU The Patriots have needed to get younger on defence for some time and that process is now finally happening. But with Adalius Thomas’ time in Boston looking to be over, they need to beef up their pass rush and Jerry Hughes at OLB sounds like a great match. Sergio Kindle is a possibility here, as is Sean Weatherspoon. 23 Green Bay Packers Mike Iupati OG, Idaho Despite putting up very impressive numbers Aaron Rodgers was hit far more often than Mike McCarthy and the Packers would want. In a draft stacked with offensive lineman going off the board, Iupati comes in at Guard and offers the possibility in time to move out to Tackle. 24 Philadelphia Eagles Sean Weatherspoon LB, Missouri When Stewart Bradley went down before the season even started, the Eagles were facing a crisis at linebacker. That they ended up with Jeremiah Trotter back signals how badly they need help there. Secondary is a possible area to be addressed also, but a smart, intelligent young linebacker on the board, the Eagles address a big need. 25 Baltimore Ravens Arrelious Benn WR, Illinois The Ravens need to give Joe Flacco some more weapons. Derrick Mason is getting ever older and talk of trading for a WR never appears to materialise. Benn is arguably the second best WR on the board, and whilst his figures at Penn State hardly stand out, he offers a lot of potential. 26 Arizona Cardinals Sergio Kindle DE/OLB, Texas With Karlos Dansby growing ever frustrated after being franchised for two seasons in a row and with his departure from Arizona seemingly imminent, the Cardinals need to boost their pass-rush. Kindle can be erratic and will need coaching but there is obvious potential to be a disruptive force in the league. A boom or bust pick. 27 Dallas Cowboys Jared Odrick DT, Penn State Dallas has three on-field needs this off-season. Offensive line, defensive line and safety. After seeing tackles and guards fly off the board ahead of them Jerry Jones realises there is nothing of value here. Same in the secondary, where only Kyle Wilson is an option. Having been burnt after several years of having Roy Williams in the secondary there is no way they go with Taylor Mays. Odrick gives the Cowboys depth on the line and the option to shuffle things around regardless of whether Marcus Spears leaves after the 2010 season. 28 San Diego Chargers Ryan Matthews RB, Fresno State With the release of L.T. this past Monday night, the Chargers have a hole in the backfield. Matthews would complement Sproles and give the Chargers a new start in the backfield. 29 New York Jets Brian Price DT, UCLA When Kris Jenkins went down for the season it was felt that the Jets would struggle, and whilst losing a player like him invariably hurt they managed to plug the gap. However, they still need an upgrade. On the defensive line, Price offers versatility and strength. 30 Minnesota Vikings Kyle Wilson CB, Boise State The Vikings don’t have many big holes to fill however they could do with a bit more assistance in the secondary. Wilson offers them to get younger and has tremendous speed as well as the ability to make big plays happen. If Ryan Matthews is there when they come on the clock, they may look at him to work with Peterson, given the possibility that Chester Taylor may be moving on. 31 Indianapolis Colts Carlos Dunlap DE, Florida The Colts would probably like to bolster the defensive tackle situation first, but at this point there is no real value to be had. So, rather than finding a trading partner (which remains possible) to move down, they take Dunlap who offers the Colts a good End who can support Freeney and Mathis. 32 New Orleans Saints Everson Griffen DE, USC And finally we come to the reigning Super Bowl Champions. Who don’t really need a lot on offence, so look to improve their (already much improved) defence. Another USC lineman gives them the chance to do so.
