NCAA Scouting Chris Brophy’s 2010 1st Round Mock Draft V1.0 Updated 26th January by Chris Brophy 26/1/2010 It’s not even February and the Diner is onto its 3rd mock draft already. We know it’s early. We know there is the Senior Bowl, the combine and the player’s individual work-outs to get through yet that will adjust their stock. Add in free agency in the NFL that helps teams address needs and so much can change. Still, mocks are good fun and get the draft mood into full swing so after Jody Jamison took a couple of cracks at mocks in the past few weeks, Chris Brophy borrowed the Mel Kiper Jr wig and took some wild stabs in the dark. Enough of the kinky stuff though, he even did a mock draft for you all to read too. 1, St Louis Rams: Ndamukong Suh DT Nebraska The Rams have plenty of needs and could well go QB but given the style of their Head Coach and the potential of Suh to be a game changing presence from the off the Rams go for value with the top pick. 2, Detroit Lions: Gerald McCoy* DT Oklahoma If the Rams go QB Martin Mayhew will take about 15 seconds to get his card up to the podium with Suh’s name on it, otherwise, they go with McCoy and leave the vital left tackle spot in Jeff Backus’ hands for another year. 3, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Eric Berry S Tennessee They would love one of the two D-line studs but in this scenario they are gone so they take arguably the most talented player in the draft. Berry can sweep up behind the Buccaneers defense, providing turnovers and big plays. 4, Washington Redskins: Sam Bradford QB Oklahoma The Redskins need lots of offensive help, in the backfield and on the line. With a new coach and GM in charge they will go for a fresh start at the key position in the smart and accurate Bradford. The ‘Skins employ his Doctor (Dr James Andrews) so will have the inside track on how his shoulder surgery went and is healing. 5, Kansas City Chiefs: Russell Okung OT Oklahoma State Easy pick for the Chiefs, they need to protect Matt Cassel and open some holes for their running attack. I’m not a massive Okung fan, I don’t think he is as good quality at the crucial island tackle position as has come out in recent years but this is the right pick for KC. 6, Seattle Seahawks: Jimmy Clausen* QB Notre Dame Matt Hasselbeck is banged up and aging. Clausen has pro offense experience and huge belief in his abilities. Hasselbeck can help him ease into the job but given Clausen’s cocky attitude, he might just shove Hass to the floor first! 7, Cleveland Browns: Joe Hadan CB Florida The Browns need a QB but should really give Brady Quinn a proper chance in my opinion. What they need more is defense and Haden takes one side of the field and locks it down. 8, Oakland Raiders: Taylor Mays S USC Flashy, physical, fast, local Al Davis will love this guy at least he fits a need though. 9, Buffalo Bills: Tim Tebow QB Florida Many early mocks don’t see Tebow in round one never mind the top ten but I think the Bills draft partly for need here and partly because in Chan Gailey, they have a coach who has shown in the pros (with the Chiefs) that he will adapt and change his offense to shut the personnel.. Tebow has great leadership qualities and if used right, he could have a massive impact. It’s a risk but any QB in round one is. 10, Denver Broncos (from Bears): Rolando McClain* LB Alabama Other early mocks talk about the Broncos is that they’ll take a receiver to replace Brandon Marshall. That’s on the assumption Marshall is traded of course. We know what assumption is don’t we Diner faithful? Until the need is there, this pick is used to continue helping rebuild the defense. 11, Jacksonville Jaguars: Derrick Morgan* DE Georgia Tech More pass rush help for the Jags who may also consider Tebow here if he is about. 12, Miami Dolphins: Jason Pierre-Paul* – DE South Florida The Dolphins could go receiver but there defense didn’t play up to standards of the year before and carries some serious age in spots. Pierre-Paul has a similar skill-set, frame and style of a certain Jason Taylor… 13, San Francisco 49ers: Trent Williams OT Oklahoma Slots in at RT and the 49ers forget about him for ten years with a bit of luck. 14, Seattle Seahawks (from Broncos): Charles Brown OT USC Brown fits a need but is considered a reach here. However, with his old college coach now in charge familiarity gets him the gig in the north-west. 15, New York Giants: Earl Thomas S Texas Once Kenny Phillips went down last season with a serious knee injury the Giants safeties were consistently ripped apart by opposing passing attacks. Thomas steps in and teams up with the returning Phillips to give the unit a double boost. 16, San Francisco 49ers (from Panthers): CJ Spiller RB Clemson Frank Gore is a tough, work horse back but he needs a compliment and Spiller can be it. Add in he adds value as a return man and as a receiving threat and he brings explosion to the 49ers offense and return game. 17, Tennessee Titans: Carlos Dunlap* DE Florida Draws comparisons to former Gator and Titan Jevon Kearse ’nuff said… 18, Pittsburgh Steelers: Anthony Davis* OT Rutgers Some help for Big Ben Roethlisberger in an attempt to add a few weeks to his life the Steelers bring in additional protection. Davis is a bit unpolished but has all the raw talent you could wish for. 19, Atlanta Falcons: Patrick Robinson CB Florida State Fits a big need and should be able to start from day one. 20, Houston Texans: Dez Bryant* WR Oklahoma State The Texans could go a few ways, mainly on defense but the chance to have a compliment to Andre Johnson that will make their already excellent passing attack even better is too good to resist. 21, Cincinnati Bengals: Golden Tate WR Notre Dame They would be upset if Bryant got that close only to be snatched away but Golden Tate maybe a safer pick in many ways and it gives Carson Palmer someone else to aim at apart from Ocho Cinco. 22, New England Patriots: Brian Price* – DT UCLA Jarvis Green and Vince Wilfork are free agents (expect Wilfork to get the franchise tag though) and they traded away Richard Seymour last year. Time to restock this unit – Price should be able to play the 5 technique end for the Patriots. 23, Green Bay Packers: Bryan Bulaga* – OT Iowa See the Steelers pick summary… 24, Philadelphia Eagles: Navorro Bowman* LB Penn State A pick for need but maybe not the best fit as the Eagles like downhill type ‘backers. However, Bowman is the best of the bunch left so for now, goes here. 25, Baltimore Ravens: Donovan Warren* – CB Michigan The Ravens D wasn’t quite as good as previous year and they are presently waiting with baited breathe to see if Ed Reed calls it a day (which would be a shame, ay too young in my opinion but it is his life). Warren has great coverage skills but can slide over to safety if required. 26, Arizona Cardinals: Ricky Sapp LB Clemson Karlos Dansby is a free agent and the Cardinals linebacking corps lacks talent after him anyway fits a need and could be a starter from day one. 27, Dallas Cowboys: Bruce Campbell* – OT Maryland The Cowboys lack of depth and talent at this spot was exposed by the Vikings. Hotel Adams is aging, Marc Columbo is average and Doug Free isn’t good enough for the LT spot so Campbell is an instant help. Maryland has a good record in recent years of producing NFL ready OT’s. 28, San Diego Chargers: Johnathan Dwyer* – RB Georgia Tech The only highly rated back in the draft appearing to have work horse potential. Dwyer can come in and team up with Darren Sproles to help replace LT who looks very much like the tank is empty. 29, New York Jets: Damian Williams WR USC Teams up with his old Trojan QB to try and bring more balance to the Jets offense. 30, Minnesota Vikings: Mike Iupati OG Idaho The interior line needs some help to make holes for the ultra-dangerous Adrian Peterson. 31, New Orleans Saints: Chad Jones S LSU A local product who should be able to help out straight away and eventually replace Darren Sharper. 32, Indianapolis Colts: Dan Williams DT Tennessee Williams is an excellent run stopper and that has looked like it could be the Colts weakness at times. He’s the perfect complement to the edge rush of Freeney and Mathis.
