Nick Johnson New Stadium! Different Mentality! Same Outcome? This year things seem rather subdued in Dallas. Is this because they lost T.O. to Buffalo? Is it because of their lack of activity early in the draft and free agency? Have the concerns over Tony Romo’s form in November and December finally made people rethink? Whichever of these reasons takes centre stage the Cowboys won’t mind it one bit. Or so we thought. Then we read the superb Ultimate Super Bowl Book, in which author Bob McGinn has not only delivered an exhaustive, blow-by-blow account of every Super Bowl game so far, he’s also done some magnificent work in collating retrospective interviews from everyone involved, from the head coach down to the water boy. Review by Michael E Lawrence: Complete Illustrated History of the New York Giants Author: Lew Freedman Up for review this week is a tremendous – and enormous – copy of Lew Freedman’s New York Giants, the Complete Illustrated History. Friends, this is a BIG book, and when it landed on the Diner desk one of the legs gave way, sending my in tray south. Nonetheless, this is what a football fan wants a potted history of their team to be – hardbacked, bold, colourful, brash and chunky, just like the New York Football Giants themselves… ( full review & FD rating )
Review by Michael E Lawrence: That First Season Author: John Eisenberg John Eisenberg’s excellent – and we mean excellent – That First Season, examines the first year of Vince Lombardi’s tenure at the Green Bay Packers. There are countless studies of Vince’s glory-filled championship seasons, but this is the first – that we know of – exclusively devoted to year one of the Lombardi reclamation project. Eisenberg’s prose is tight and punchy, and the story he tells is one of a big-city coach finally winning over a downtrodden, small market team populated with future Hall of Famers as yet frittering away their potential… ( full review & FD rating )
